As We all know by now, the presidential elections which were slated to hold nationwide last Saturday the 16th of February got abruptly postponed in the early hours of that very day around 2:50am. Announced by the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Mahmoud Yakubu saying the sudden postponement was as a result of logistics problems which could be rectified in a week thus pushing it a week after to the 23rd of February. As expected, the Nigerian populace didn’t welcome that news with open arms blaming the commission for a lackadaisical and grossly unserious attitude because they literally had 4 whole years to prepare for this so how do we expect what couldn’t be put in place wothon 4 years Cana be fixed in a week. In INECs defense the logistics problem was largely caused by the attacks on some of the INEC offices on various which had them going up in flames. Celebrities such as Kate Henshaw, Timi Dakolo, Davido and many more took to their social media platforms to express their dissatisfaction and disappointment and further to say that regardless of how many times or how far back the election is canceled or moved to, we will all still turn out in mass to cast our votes.
There’s also been some outbreaks of violence in various states and at different times. Be it actual violence during campaigns or threats of violence by public figures and politicians, it’s all been a tad bit messy. Take for instance, the comments by The kaduna state governor Nasir El Rufai about those who come to the country to intrude and interfere will be returned to their countries in body bags. The international body didn’t take this lightly because former US president Bill Clinton who intended to come witness the election had a change of heart and cancelled his trip. Also the minister of transportation Rotimi Amaechi was said to have also said certain things that would most likely incite violence during the polls in rivers state and finally not forgetting about the most recent one, president Buhari’s order to shoot ballot box snatchers on site. Although the INEC chairman Mahmoud Yakubu countered it stating that no one should get shot but rather arrested but that holds little because the president’s orders obviously supersedes his besides APC national leader Chief Bola Timubu yesterday backed up and supported PMB’s order.
After all has been said and done, one can’t help but worry, hope and pray because some have stated the probability of violence after the elections due to the results because regardless of who wins between Team Buhari or Team Atiku, the result has to go down well with the losing camp thus evading any possibility of violence. However it’s quite pleasing to remind y’all that PMB and Atiku have both signed peace agreement. So let’s all stop stocking our houses with food items like there’s gonna be a war cus there won’t be any. The international community is watching and no one wants to openly embarrass themselves lol. Another post coming up tomorrow but this would be on a sports run down over these weeks I’ve been away. Bless up!
